| | Campaign to Reduce Rents for Harlow Council Tenants | |
|
Harlow Council is one of only three local
authorities in England proposing to reject the Government’s offer
to reduce rent increases for council tenants this
year.
Part of a package of measures to
tackle the recession by boosting the spending power of consumers,
the Government announced unprecedented action in March that
authorities would have the opportunity to bid for subsidy, if, and
only if, they were prepared to revisit the council rents set and
reduce them by that amount. The Government announced it would halve
the national average guideline increase from 6.2% to 3.1% for
2009/10 in the context of the present unprecedented global
downturn.
Since March I
have been pushing Harlow Council to take advantage of this subsidy,
but to no avail.
Together with
Harlow Council's Labour Group and Defend Council Housing, I am
launching a petition to force the Council's hand on
this.

I do not think the rent on council properties should necessarly be cheaper but think more houses need to be bought, we are living on the 11th floor of Netteswell Tower and have a 6 month old son and
the lifts are constantly breaking in which we have to walk the 11 flights with our baby and have been told by Harlow Council we still have to wait 2 years before they can move us, this is ridiculous
this is because of imigration and we have lived in Harlow all our lives and paid taxes and have to live like this so that people whome have just moved to OUR country and have NOT paid a penny can
reap the bennifits!! why is this?? |

As homeowners have benefited from lower mortgage payments and low interest rates, the poorest members of society who live in council homes have to petition and beg to have our rents reduced a little
as agreed by the government. To think i was going to vote tory at the next election but if this is how they act locally then heaven forbid they get to form a government. ps. is labour ever going to
build proper new council homes, weve waited long enough. |
