Swindon Hospital Under Attack from Tories
The Conservative Shadow Health Spokesman, Andrew Lansley MP, has attacked Swindon's Great Western Hospital and implied the money that built it should have gone to Tory areas In a Conservative Party press release (April 12th) Mr. Lansley listed the hospitals built by Labour, including the GWH, and criticised the projects. Anne issued this statement: “The GWH was long needed and long awaited. People in Swindon deserved a new hospital, no matter which Party they voted for. I will continue my fight against the Tory plans to take funding away from the areas that need it most.”“Hospital numbers went down under the Tories. Conservatives closed the Princes Alexandra hospital in Wroughton and let the Princes Margaret Hosptial go to rack and ruin.” Cllr Fay Howard, a local nurse, said:
"Swindon needed a new hospital. Having been neglected under the Tories for years, now we have something great here in Swindons NHS. It's great to go to work now and know the toilets won't overflow and you don't have dodge wet sewage to nurse patients. We have a building that is great to work in, patients feel better in and everything works.
"Would he [Lansley] rather Swindon was Tory with no new hospitals? I know what I'd choose for the people of Swindon and all those who have benefitted from new hospitals, new schools, new
Surestarts... "
The Conservative Party press release admits 46 new hospitals have been built by Labour since 1997. http://www.info.doh.gov.uk/nhsfactsheets.nsf/0/80257049003E2A3D802573090035C9D5/$FILE/152392172_AC_RN3_20070629_104449.htm
