My achievements are the achievements
of the teachers and youth workers at Mulberry School and Tower
Hamlets College. It was their belief in me that gave me my passport
to opportunity – a place at Oxford University, and jobs in
Parliament, the Institute for Public Policy Research, the Foreign
and Commonwealth Office, the Home Office, and then as an
Associate Director of the Young Foundation in Bethnal
Green.
I helped set up Tower Hamlets Summer
University, which has benefited thousands of young people and cut
youth crime. I am a Governor of Tower Hamlets College, where I
studied. I am a Commissioner for the London Child Poverty
Commission, because it’s a scandal that so many children here in
the East End and across London are living in poverty.
When I saw people in Tower Hamlets
denied the help they needed because they couldn't speak English, I
helped to develop “Languageline”, which has grown into a national
telephone interpreting service in over 100 languages. It provides a
lifeline for the most vulnerable in our communities. I have first
hand experience of dealing with tough situations working to bring
divided communities together in Burnley, Bradford and Oldham after
the riots in 2001.
As your MP, I
will:
- Fight for more jobs, training,
investment for our schools and hospitals, affordable
housing and support for local businesses
- Hold regular constituency surgeries,
visit every school and every estate to hear directly from people
about their concerns
- Use my experience to support and
strengthen voluntary and community organisations in Tower
Hamlets
- Meet regularly with community and
women’s groups, housing associations, business groups and
faith-based organisations
- Work closely with the Labour Mayor, the
Labour Government and our Labour Council to get the best deal for
Bethnal Green and Bow.
- Use the talents and expertise of our
school teachers, youth workers, parents and the wider community to
keep improving educational standards.
- Campaign to help the people who suffer
through lack of affordable housing.
- Campaign with health professionals and
community workers to reduce the crippling health inequalities in
Tower Hamlets – heart disease and diabetes are amongst our biggest
killers.
