As Vice Chair of the Labour
Party with Responsibility for Youth my top three
priorities are to:
- Engage all young
people in politics - not just Labour Party
members.
- Listen to the
priorities of all young people
- Act as a voice for
young people on issues of importance to them
In 2005 only 37% of
18-24 year olds voted in the general election. This is not
acceptable, our right to vote is precious and I
want to encourage young people to use it. Locally and
Nationally I have always campaigned for young people. Earlier on
this year I tabled an Early Day Motion calling for
an end to the negative representation of young people. 90% of
stories in the media about young people are negative. This needs to
stop and adults need to
work with young people and listen to their views, not just to the
stereotypes. I plan to continue my campaign, and am
currently working with the Party on innovative new ways to engage
with young people. Since my election in 2005 I have
held a number of youth forums and events in my constituency Brent
South. I have also brought young people to Parliament and
campaigned successfully on issues of importance to them. As
national Vice Chair for Youth, I plan to keep on doing this - but I
plan to involve the young people in the whole
country.

The choices
you make now –as a young person- will affect what happens later in
your life.
Labour
believes in providing a fair start for everybody in life and
ensuring opportunity for all to reach their full
potential As Vice-Chair
for Youth, my promise to you is that I will ensure that your views
and your ideas are put firmly on the
agenda.
In politics
and the media, people often pay lip-service to young people and
their needs. Labour doesn’t just talk about young people, we
listen. We want you
to tell us what is important –it’s your life so have your
say!
