Nia Griffith MP fighting to recover unjust fees for miners

Did you have fees deducted from your miners’ compensation?

Some solicitors and unions have taken fees from miners, despite the fact that the government has paid for all legal and medical costs. If you have not yet claimed back fees deducted from your compensation, please contact my Constituency Office.

>> Cutting Fuel Bills
Saving energy is an essential part of any policy to combat climate change. That’s why the Department for the Environment and the Welsh Assembly are financing the Home Energy Efficiency Scheme (HEES), which helps householders save energy and cut fuel bills by providing grants for measures such as home insulation and replacing broken heating systems. What you can claim depends on your income, but the over 80s can claim regardless of income. I have set up information days with HEES and local organisations when you can find out more about the grants available. You can also opt for a benefit check to make sure that you are claiming everything you are entitled to. The next information da...

>> Fighting to recover unjust fees for miners
Has a solicitor or your union deducted fees from your miners' compensation?
If so, you will need to claim it back. A special surgery will be held on Friday 17th October, 1pm-4pm, at Pontyberem Memorial Hall, where Legal Complaints Service Advisors will be available to offer advice about this. No appointment is necessary. ...

>> Giving a big boost to renewable energy
Nia visiting marine turbines with the Director of Marine Current Turbines   The Government’s Renewable Energy Strategy consultation is a much-needed and very welcome step forward in promoting renewables. I would very much value feed-back from constituents on the proposals, so please join me for a discussion at 7pm Friday 19th Sept in Ponthenri Hall or 7pm on Wednesday 24th Sept in Cross Hands Workingmen’s Club. The strategy proposes generating a third of our electricity from renewables by 2020. It involves £100 billion pounds of new investment, creating 160,000 new jobs, saving 20 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year by 2020, and reducing our gas imports by 16%. On the issue of...

>> Private Finance Initiative (PFI)
Nia recently introduced a 10 minute rule Bill in the House of Commons to make companies that benefit from contracts arising from the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) pay taxes in the UK.
“It’s a scandal that tax avoidance has become, for some companies, one of the perks of PFI, “ said Nia explaining the reasoning behind her Bill.
It is outrageous  that some companies that are benefiting from the taxpayers’ money have transferred their ownership to somewhere like Guernsey or other tax havens. In this way, they avoid paying UK tax on their income and profits.” ...

>> Tackling the Rise in the Price of Fuel
“In  Llanelli,”Nia points out, “we have lots of public sector workers in health, education and local government. Very often these people are routinely expected to use their own cars in carrying out their work. Cutting corners to save pennies ought not to be an option.
I have written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling putting the case that one measure which would help alleviate this problem would be the raising of the tax threshold from the current 40p per mi...

>> Nia Welcomes new Carers' Strategy
Nia recently joined the shopworkers’ union Usdaw in welcoming the new Carers’ Review.  She said, “The £150million funding for more respite care and short breaks for carers will greeted with enthusiasm by the hundreds of carers in the Llanelli area.” At the meeting, organised by Usdaw at the House of Commons,  Nia spoke to carers about their difficulties in juggling work and care and the financial hardships that they all too often face. Nia said, “I was delighted to meet some of the millions of the UK’s hard-working carers who do such a vital job and show tremendous dedication. I am determined to give them as much help as I can. “I have written to the Minister James ...

>> Nia Griffith MP calls on the EU to ban trade in seal products after seeing the cruelty of Canadian hunt
Contrary to claims by the Canadian government that new regulations would make this year’s hunt the most humane ever, International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) filmed numerous instances of seals suffering slow and painful deaths after being clubbed or shot, with many being hooked or skinned while still alive. Nia said: “I am horrified to see the level of suffering involved in the hunt, despite the Canadian government’s claim that this year’s hunt would be more humane. It is time for Europe to ban the unnecessary trade in seal products so that we play no further part in this cruelty.” Seals are killed mainly so their fur can be used in the fashion industry, with most of the carca...

>> Working with Young People in Hendy
I know that the majority of our young people are keen to get involved. Certainly in Hendy they spoke up at a meeting I organised with community councillors, the police and youth workers. As a result, they influenced the choice of shelter in the park provided by Llanedi Community Council and proved there is enough interest for the County to start supporting a youth project in the village. ...

>> Improving village life in Ponthenri
Responding to residents’ requests, I persuaded the Council to provide clearer street signs for Thomas Avenue. I am now lobbying for improvements to the park as well as traffic calming in Heol y Pentre and Myrtle Hill. ...

>> Quieter Roads
In response to residents’ concerns about heavy traffic, I have managed to persuade some big retail companies to send their lorries on route from Llanelli to Carmarthen via the M4, rather than along Sandy Road, and through Pwll, Burry Port and Pembrey. ...

>> Safer roundabout at Cross Hands
Nia with Ryan Thomas who helped survey local residents about lights on the roundabout.                After first lobbying Assembly ministers two years ago about safety on Cross Hands Roundabout,      I appreciate the recent attempts to improve matters, but I have asked for continued monitoring of traffic flow with a view to possible part-time lights.   ...

>> More youth facilities in Tycroes
Nia and Cllr. Dewi Enoch visitng Linda and Sam at Tycroes Internet Cafe.
I would like to see better leisure facilities for young people, but I know this can be difficult outside the town centres, so I welcomed the chance to talk with the owners of Tycroes Internet Café and      Cllr Dewi Enoch about providing more activities for young people in Tycroes. ...

>> New school in the Morfa
Nia looking at plans for the new Morfa school with Cllrs Gerald Meyler and Dave Tucker “After my own long experience of teaching in dilapidated portakabins on split site schools, I am thrilled to see our present government’s commitment to education translate into a brand new state of the art school and community facility in the Morfa” ...

>> Prince Philip Hospital

As a regular supporter of the fund-raising events at Prince Philip Hospital, I know how much local people value our hospital and give generously to provide extra facilities there. With my father suffering a series of ministrokes four years ago, I am very pleased to support the new stroke recovery unit, and I am delighted that Cllr Tegwen Devichand has secured extra money from the County towards it.  ...

>> Warmer Homes
With Cllrs Bill Thomas and Ed Skinner looking round homes in Maestref which will benefit from the Council’s plans for warmer home insulation schemes.  “In Parliament, I lobby for more energy saving measures, as improving energy efficiency is the quickest and cheapest way to begin cutting our carbon emissions. It is encouraging to see the money for the warmer homes schemes provided by the UK Government via the Assembly actually making a difference to local families. Insulating homes makes them feel   warmer, saves energy and cuts fuel bills, as well as helping to combat climate change”   ...

>> Smarter neighbourhoods
Anti-social behaviour and litter can blight an area. That’s why I am supporting Cllrs Keri Thomas and Martin Morris with their plans to have resident only access to some troublesome alleyways near the town centre. ...

>> MP's Christmas Card Competition
A big thank you to Roger Bowles, Caricaturist, Robert Lloyd Editor of the Journal and the Star and Ethne Phillips Chair of the Llanelli Art Society who undertook the very difficult task of judging the many excellent entries for my “design your MP’s Christmas Card competition”. Children were asked to include Big Ben in their designs. Elizabeth Campbell of Llannon School won the Junior category and Hannah Matthews from Copperworks Infant School won the Infant category and their designs will be used on my Christmas Cards. Entries will be on display in the St Elli Centre Nov 26th – Dec 7th. ...

>> Tackling flood risk in Llanelli
Horrified by the flooding in Nelson Terrace, I was determined to stop a repeat occurrence. I asked Welsh Water to meet local representatives and I am pleased that they are now installing new pumping equipment to protect Nelson Terrace. We also need to tackle the wider issue that new development reduces soakaway areas, increases surface water and puts additional pressure on the sewers in Southern Llanelli, so I organised a wider meeting between Welsh Water, Councillors and other interested parties. From this we are setting up the Llanelli Flooding Forum; for further information, please contact my office. ...

>> Welsh exports rising
Figures out last month show recent growth in Welsh exports well up on the UK average, with exports from Wales up some 43% since 1999, compared to the UK average of 26%. It is great when you see reality matching the statistics and companies taking on more staff. That is exactly what I found when I visited Picton Sports Ltd in their new premises in Dafen, built with the help of a County Council grant. The company specialises in embroidering customised badges on sportswear. From marketing to local schools and clubs, they are now supplying orders to Toronto, Toulouse and Taipei. ...
