Dear
Darren,
I was disappointed to hear
that the Gazette intends to shut its office in Redcar. This
would leave us without a reporter in the borough when many of the
issues residents face in Redcar and indeed in the rural parts of
the area are distinct from those faced in
Middlesbrough.
A retreat to Middlesbrough
will enhance the impression that the paper focuses excessively on
only the biggest town in the area whilst the issues of industrial
redevelopment, unemployment and regeneration in Redcar are less
well reported.
Of course I understand that
the downturn might mean that savings may need to be made.
During this downturn, however, it seems even more crucial to cover
all parts of Teesside equally. The Gazette is not an ordinary
business and must recognise its crucial role in the
town.
I would be grateful if you
could explain in more detail what the justification for these
proposed cutbacks is, and in what way you plan to consult and
reassure the local community that news in Redcar will remain a
priority.
Regards,
Vera Baird QC
